Kevin Krentz Earns Doctorate

June 6, 2011

Our own artistic director, Kevin Krentz, has just earned his Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of Washington. His thesis, "Vibrato and the Cello," an objective analysis of the mechanics of vibrato, was inspired by his own experience developing vibrato technique. The thesis begins with a thorough review of the existing literature and teaching methods associated with vibratro.

Dr. Krentz extended that work with a program of extensive physiological research and body-activity measurements designed to pinpoint which specific muscles are involved in a correct vibrato process and how they function. His experimental evidence suggests that much of what students are taught about vibrato may be physiologically incorrect.

His research points the way toward a new and more effective way to teach students to vibrate.

We congratulate Kevin on his achievement.
