2025 Summer Festival Scrapbook

I’ve always loved variety in a concert. Some prefer themed programs, but themes can sometimes limit variety — so they’re not really for me. Imagine my delight, then, when, completely by chance, a theme emerged from this year’s variety-focused programming.

It’s no secret: I love to pepper my programs with new works and this year is no different. What excites me especially is that — without any effort or forethought — all four of the new pieces featured in this year’s festival are by women. Young women. While I admit I’m weary of endless identity discourse, I felt genuine joy when I realized this had happened entirely by chance. After writing so many programs over the years, it’s clear how few of the names we see are not male—but that is finally starting to change.
